ECA and Bogotá Update
There are only seven more weeks of classes left. I am thankful God has helped me through this semester. The girls’ volleyball team that I coach has played two games and lost both. The high school guys’ soccer tournament finished this week and the championship will be on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. This year’s tournament was so close and competitive, but the staff will be competing against 11th grade for the title. Right now I am teaching ultimate frisbee and getting ready to start a sports challenge with 3rd and 4th grade during lunch. A few weeks ago I led my first soccer class in Spanish with the ministry I am volunteering with. The kids there are really awesome.
Medellín Trip
I visited the soccer ministry in Medellín on March 21-24 to see if I want to work and live there after this school year. I felt the Lord was urging me in that direction, so I was expecting to be sure it was the place. I had a good time visiting and seeing the different parts of the ministry, staying with a family, and seeing more of the city. Reflecting on that trip, I am not sure if that’s where I want to go as I have mixed feelings. However, it would be a great opportunity to learn Spanish and grow in many things. During that time I realized how much my Spanish had grown and was able to have deeper conversations with people.
One cool testimony is that I sat beside guy from Ecuador who lives in New York on the plane to Medellín. I asked him at the end if there was anything I could pray for him about, and he told me he has had problems with his liver. I prayed for him, and I believe he is healed! Another divine encounter happened on the plane coming back as I met two girls sitting beside me. Turns out they were staying with a friend who lived very close to me and they didn’t know how to get there. I got to lead them there, had breakfast with them and their friend, and we hung out talking for about four and half hours!
On the Horizon
Right now I am still unsure about my future. School ends in two months, so I need to decide fairly soon what I am going to do. I honestly feel a bit lost and confused, but it’s yet another lesson of trusting the Lord and choosing to be joyful. This week (April 7-10) I will be visiting a ministry in the smaller city of Armenia in the coffee region where I visited over Christmas break a few months ago. This is a soccer ministry, but on a much smaller scale. This could be a good opportunity to work with a ministry that is growing and looking for help. I also have an “offer” in Barranquilla on the coast, but at this point I don’t feel led in that direction. I know my future is in God’s hands, and I know I have the freedom to choose, but in the end I really want what God wants even if it means simply choosing between two options. I believe He is refining me through this process of discernment.
“And when you pray, don’t heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their many words. Don’t be like them, for our Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
-Matthew 6:7-8
