It’s hard to believe it’s been four months since I came to Bogotá. These months have been filled with adventures, joys, frustrations, challenges, and growth. I know the Lord has called me here to fulfill His purposes to advance His kingdom and make me more like Him. I am realizing more and more that this journey to and in Colombia is all about my relationship with Him and less about what I am doing. I know I can’t do this in my own strength, power or intellect.
PE Update
I have enjoyed teaching Ultimate this past month to the guys in middle and high school. I have been teaching soccer and basketball to 2nd-4th grades and will start baseball soon. This week I start teaching Ultimate to the girls in grades 5-12. Middle school soccer and high school basketball continue to go well. We had our first basketball game several weeks ago at a neighboring school and lost 28-21. Right now 3rd and 4th grades are playing several sports against each other during lunches such as dodgeball, soccer, hockey, and basketball. Middle and high school are in the middle of their dodgeball tournaments during lunches. The middle school championship games are this week while high school is competing for the top two spots for guys and girls. It has been fun to play against the guys as the staff has a team in the high school tournament.
Opportunities
There have been several cool experiences and opportunities I’ve had in October. Me and my roommate had a visitor named Rey from Panama who stayed with us for a few days during his visit to Bogotá. I had the opportunity to go on a field trip with my 11th grade homeroom class to Catedral de Sal, an underground salt mine in the town of Zipaquirá. I also “randomly” got to meet some members of a World Race mission team from the United States. I got to have lunch with a guy I have been praying for and his family one day in a city outside Bogotá.
One for my favorite things was spending two days in the tiny town of Apulo about three hours away from the city. I went after the first quarter had ended to relax with some other teachers from ECA. A family at the school offered to let us stay with them. It was an amazingly beautiful place – so peaceful and relaxing. I was just what I needed after an exhausting end to the quarter.
Lord, Give Me a Vision
I have been asking the Lord to give me a vision for Colombia for the present and long-term. I feel the Lord is preparing me for long-term ministry through my time at ECA. Sometimes it feels like I am not really making that much of an impact in the daily responsibilities of school. I am trying to be more intentional about talking with students, meeting with them, and asking them questions. My ministry is ECA so I need to remind myself to pour myself out and continually be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Lord calls us to be with Him and spend time with Him. He has been shaping my desires and convictions through the challenging things here. That is my main ministry that can so often be overlooked and neglected. I am excited to see what the Lord has for me in the days, weeks, and months to come!
